2444 Walnut Street
Built c. 1868
Nicholas Stoll was born in Switzerland on March 13, 1843. He arrived in Blue Island in 1864.
During the Civil War, Stoll entered the service of his adopted country, enlisting in February, 1865, as a member of Co. G, 1st Illinois Light Artillery. Upon his return, Stoll resumed his occupation as a cabinet maker in a billiard table manufacturer.
In 1877 Stoll opened a factory of his own in Chicago, which later became known as the Garden City Billiard Table Company (a fascinating bit of company history has been preserved on the Illinois Secretary of State website). Stoll served as Village Trustee from 1886-1888.
This handsome but simple frame home was typical of the period. The bracket decorations beneath the eaves were a popular Italianate feature of the time.
